David Miliband: 'It was a phantom veto'

Former foreign secretary David Miliband has said David Cameron's use of the veto in EU negotiations was "the first veto in history not to stop something".

Speaking to John Humphrys, he said that the "phantom veto" was "a very self-defeating way of standing up for Britain".

"The idea that in the modern world, where countries are more tied together than ever before, we're doing ourselves any good in economic policy or in foreign policy, by setting ourselves aside from our neighbours, is really foolish," he said.
