At CGI 2023, World Leaders Launch 160 New Commitments to Action That Address Climate Change, Ukraine Relief and Reconstruction, the Global Refugee Crisis, the Rights of Women and Girls, and more

CGI 2023 Meeting closes with critical discussions with Ajay Banga, World Bank President; Albert Bourla, CEO, Pfizer; Ruth Porat, President, Chief Investment Officer, and Chief Financial Officer of Alphabet and Google; Catherine Russell, Executive Director, UNICEF; Lani Shiota, Professor, Department of Psychology, Arizona State University; and the awarding of the 2023 Elevate Prize Catalyst Award to Michael J. Fox, Founder, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
Since 2005, more than 10,000 partners from across the public and private sectors have launched more than 4,000 Commitments to Action that are making a difference in the lives of more than 500 million people in 180 countries.

NEW YORK, NY – Today, President Bill Clinton, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Clinton Foundation Vice Chair Chelsea Clinton concluded the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) 2023 Meeting, announcing 160 new Commitments to Action that address climate change, health equity, inclusive economic growth, the global refugee crisis, the rights of women and girls, and more. Including the commitments made at CGI 2023, since 2005 more than 10,000 partners from across the public and private sectors have made more than 4,000 Commitments to Action that are making a difference in the lives of more than 500 million people in 180 countries.
Launched by President Clinton in 2005, CGI has built a community of doers who are taking action to make a tangible difference in people’s lives around the world. Highlights for the CGI 2023 Meeting program included:
- President Clinton opening CGI 2023 with a special conversation with His Holiness Pope Francis via remote link, on what it takes to keep going on the most pressing global challenges of our time like climate change, the refugee crisis, the welfare of children, and the mission and projects of the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital. - Secretary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen discussing the care economy, the economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. foreign policy, and more in a fireside chat. Read the full transcript of the conversation here.
- Dr. Chelsea Clinton announcing the CGI Women and Girls pillar, a core focus area for CGI aimed specifically and ambitiously at achieving full equality and equity for women and girls once and for all.
- The launch of the CGI Ukraine Action Network with 19 CGI commitment-makers, in a session featuring Olena Zelenska, First Lady of Ukraine, the recipient of the 2023 Clinton Global Citizen Award.
- A special session on protecting journalists and freedom of the press, focused on Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich’s detention in Russia. Read more about the session here.
When fully funded and implemented, the 160 new Commitments to Action launched at CGI 2023 will have a positive impact on the lives of more than 285 million people. Collectively, when fully implemented, these commitments will facilitate:
- More than 1 million people receiving job training or skills development;
- The creation of more than 55,000 full-time, permanent jobs;
- Increased access to primary care services for more than 54 million people;
- Training for more than 115,000 new health workers for improved healthcare services;
- More than $170 million in funding to support innovation and entrepreneurship.

Since the CGI 2022 Meeting:
- More than 385,000 people have received job training or skills development opportunities;
- More than 10,000 physicians and health workers have received training to improve healthcare services;
- More than 300,000 full-time, permanent jobs have been created;
- More than 500 thousand tonnes of CO2 has been reduced or avoided;
- More than $5 million in funding has been deployed to support historically excluded communities and businesses;
- More than 10 million individuals have received increased access to primary care services; and
- More than $1.7 million has been invested in regenerative and/or climate-smart agriculture.
