Julia Roberts and Jack O’Connell are in talks to join George Clooney in Money Monster, a financial drama being directed by Jodie Foster.
TriStar is behind the project, which joins the growing list of prestige projects being assembled by Tom Rothman as he rebuilds the label with a focus on talent and filmmakers.
If a deal is made, this will be Roberts’ first re-teaming with Clooney since Ocean’s Thirteen. O’Connell, meanwhile, is emerging as one of the hottest actors currently working. His big break will be seen by the public when his starring turn in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken opens Dec. 25.
Clooney is set to star as Lee Gates, a bombastic television stock huckster, whose program — Money Monster — and life are taken hostage by an outraged gunman (O’Connell). As much of the world watches live, Gates must keep himself alive and, with help from the woman who produces the show (Roberts), uncover the truth behind a tangle of big money lies. The script is said to unfold in near real-time.
Alan DiFore and Jim Kouf wrote the original draft of the script. Jamie Linden wrote the current draft.
Daniel Dubiecki and Lara Alameddine are producing through their Allegiance Theater shingle. Clooney and Grant Heslov are producing through their company, Smokehouse.
