Superfoods: Why we're drinking our mushrooms this winter

A Siberian medicinal mushroom is the latest craze to sweep California's health guru community. Named chaga, it's being sold in lattes as well as in powder-form and is the superfood star of the season.

At Hollywood's favorite health-food store Erewhon, the 'chagaccino' is the new early morning fuel visitors can't get enough of and instead of coffee art, baristas decorate the steaming bowls of naturally vanilla-flavored chaga powder with a touch of silky coconut cream. This Siberian mushroom is the new calorie-free energy-packed ingredient that's taking the West Coast by storm, but it's already been used for centuries in Asia and Russia. The non-toxic birch tree parasite is harvested after a period of five years, during which time it draws on the tree's resources to extract the nutrients it needs. Studies have proven its incredible health benefits on the immune system and inflammation, due to its high content of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

Over at Four Sigmatic, another wellbeing specialist, chaga is sold in the form of a ready-to-dilute powder, after double-processing with water and alcohol to extract all nutrients. To increase its potential even further, fans alternate it with other exotic-sounding energizing mushrooms, such as cordyceps and reishi.
